Wheels & Wattle launches … where the riders will start!
The Rotary Club of Maryborough (Vic) has officially launched its new-look weekend cycling event Wheels & Wattle, right at the place where riders will start all seven courses: Maryborough’s iconic Princes Park.
To be held on the AFL Grand Final long weekend, Wheels & Wattle features four road distances between Maryborough and Mt Tarrengower on Friday 25 September, including the King of the Mountain, right to the summit.
The next day will see the gravel and mountain bike riders get their fix with three off-road courses through state forests to the south of the town. Attesting to the popularity of gravel cycling, the 77-kilometre Daisy Hill Forest Adventure has become the best-selling course in ticket sales to date.
In moving to a weekend rather than one-day event and basing it in the town centre, the Rotary Club of Maryborough is seeking to encourage visitors to stay over and support local businesses and tourism, Rotarian and Co-Event Director Anthony Ohlsen said.
“We want people to bring their families up for the weekend and have a look around,” Mr Ohlsen said. “There’s still Sunday for people to have a look around the central goldfields region on their way home.”
Mr Ohlsen added that the club hit on the title “Wheels & Wattle” because the local wattle and similarly coloured canola will be in bloom and to evoke the town’s former Wattle Festival, once a beloved fixture on the town’s event calendar.
The Wheels & Wattle courses are non-competitive, except for a time trial to decide the King of the Mountain. Money raised from Wheels & Wattle will support the club’s community projects, such as its book donations to babies and Year 4 students.
