Congratulations to all members past and present who have made the Rotary Club or Corio Bay a force to be reckoned with!
A full report of the celebrations is included in their "Club Courier' 2 March and copied here.
Sunday 26th February was the chosen date for our Club’s Diamond Jubilee. It was such a success and so enjoyable because of a great team effort and I’d like to thank the following in particular on behalf of our Club: the well executed plans spearheaded by Gary Beckley, Michael Carne and Deb Furlan which saw Guests and members entertained from start to finish.
The location in the function room at the Geelong RSL was the ideal venue for our celebrations. The afternoon tea was exceptionally generous; the room display of memorabilia was fantastic. During the course of the afternoon, guests enjoyed anecdotes of the Club’s many achievements, presented by senior members (some requiring the use of notes as their memories were a little faded) and complimentary speeches by guests. All in all, a great afternoon of fellowship and laughter as memories were re-awakened with outrageous tales and anecdotes. A wonderful display of club banners, photo-graphic records courtesy largely of the work of Club photographer Maxine Tesoriero provided focal points for many.
Deb Furlan put together a very professional power point of selected photos backed by some great music choices. A mammoth effort done without a fuss. Following the opening address by President Barbara, we were pleased to be able to recognise two 60 year veteran Rotarians with PHFs with a sapphire each.
Photos courtesy of Michael Carne, Judith Parsons, Deb Furlan—many thanks!
Congratulations to PP Ian Thomson (a Charter Member of our Club), and PP Ian Thompson, a current member; and past member of several other clubs.
The two men were presented with the Pins, Certificates, and the warmest congratulations of all in attendance which included their families who witnessed the presentations and tributes, and participated in the many photo opportunities.

FEBRUARY 26 2023 - address by President Barbara Abley AM GCSJ FACN
“The Rotary Club of Corio Bay warmly welcomes you all to today’s celebrations – our 60th Birthday (Diamond jubilee), signifying our Charter and service in 1963 to local communities within our District, across Australia and Internationally. We're a strong club with membership in the teens – and we have proven that size doesn’t matter and bears no relationship to the suc-cess of our projects.
However, we recognise that working alone can limit the reach of our pro-jects, and the impact we hope to make. The club is always refocusing on how we can best service communities both here in our city and our District.
Congratulations to all of you as together we celebrate this significant anniversary. Sixty years ago, the club's charter members felt that Rotary's ideal of service to the community was worthy and credible, and for this rea-son they laid the foundation for a Rotary Club in Corio.
Today, our club continues to bring new ideas and fresh enthusiasm to a tradition of service that has spanned generations. So today, as Gary reflects on past accomplishments, our members with your support, are encouraged to continue to lead Rotary into many decades of service. Continue to focus on pro-jects that provide clean water, improve health and eliminate hunger, and advance literacy in clubs and districts around the world. Promote and advocate for a fair share for all.
I would be remiss if I did not offer special congratulations to each of you who have played a part, large or small in assisting the Rotary Club to fulfil its aims and objectives over the past 6 decades. In assisting the Rotary Foundation, through the recognition of individual service and presentation of Paul Harris Fellowships in our Club, we have contributed approx. $32,000 US since charter. (Approx $46,000 Aus.) An enormous sum of money—doing a power of good around the community and the world.
So, to members past and present, Friends of Rotary, families and friends, as we celebrate these important milestones in our club's history today, remember the responsibility for Rotary’s relevance is yours. Take pride each day in the decisions you make and the actions you take, because these choices are determining the course of Rotary for us all.
I can’t think of no better bunch of Rotarians to entrust the carriage of traditions and strength of this organization than to today’s members, who collectively look back on the foundations laid by those Charter Members in 1963 and use these as a springboard into the future..
I, on behalf of the Club hope that you enjoy renewing friendships, stories [don’t let the truth get in the way of a good yarn], memorabilia, and don’t forget that membership is always open to former and new members. Age is no barrier!
The Future of Rotary is in all of our Hands—members past & present, families, Friends of Rotary. Through your continued support and interest I know that Rotary’s influence is enduring.”
