Water and Sanitation

When asked what is the most important aspect in life, I simply reply it is love. When asked what is important to me, I reply family and friends. When asked what is the most important resource in life, my reply is water.

Living in a very dry continent we all know and appreciate how important water is to our daily living and we are blessed to have access to water and proper sanitation. Statistics shall show us that few people in the world die from thirst however millions die from preventable waterborne diseases. It is estimated that over 2.5 billion people lack access to adequate sanitation facilities – the simple act of providing toilets that flush into a sewer or safe enclosure rather than into the streets – would improve the life of many communities. We are also able to assist by promoting good hygiene habits especially through education. The message on water and sanitation is simple – if you add clean water you reduce deaths by 5%. Add sanitation and this improves to 35% . Add soap and it improves to 49%.

Like all Rotary work “ Our success will only be defined by the work we do – providing clean water and better sanitation to those that do not have this basic and important resource – is a way of making a change to the life of others “

That is Rotary Serving Humanity.

Be BOLD - and be prepared to adapt to a changing world

Interplast Request

We have a request from Interplast for assistance to purchase new diathermy machines. The request has been sent to all districts in Australia.

A diathermy machine is used to generate an intense supply of electricity to a small bleeing vessel, and to cause it to seal up. They are used in all forms of surgery, but are of essential use in the plastic and reconstructive surgery undertaken by Interplast.  Each team that undertakes clinical work needs one, and needs to function reliably.

There will be three or four needed at a cost of about $4,000 each.  Further details attached.

NYSF Report - Tamika Nash-Hahn

In the days leading up to NYSF I got cold feet. I was so nervous about going away for two weeks with 195 other teenagers who I’d never met. I boarded the bus to my allocated seat at 2am. The boy and girl behind me were headed for NYSF, so naturally I assumed the whimpering teenage girl next to me was as well. I started conversing with her about Canberra, expectations for NYSF and the rattling drink bottle in front of us. It wasn’t until we dismounted the bus in Melbourne and she headed the opposite direction did I and my fellow peers realise she wouldn’t be joining us on our trek to Canberra. I felt rarer than the rattlin’ bog. Oops.

The full story of NYSF 2017 cannot be revealed for I do not wish to sabotage the experience for future NYSFers.

I will try to detail what I can whilst sharing my feelings and selected stories.

Mid February 2017, a new futsal season will commence for approx 30 - 40 male as well as 15 - 20 female refugee and asylum seekers living in Geelong's northern suburbs.

A pilot men's league program kicked off in late 2015 that was developed by Councils fOrt Youth Centre and Leasuretime Centre management team in conjunction with Football Federation Victoria (FFV).  The program was made possible thanks to the support, sponsorship and leadership of the Rotary Club of Corio Bay 􀀃

The concept was a fantastic initiative and was a great way to help ensure players from a number of backgrounds felt welcome each week in a team sports environment and being part of the local community, while also learning about each others culture and experiences.

Thanks to the Volunteer Transport Service funded by the combined Rotary Clubs of Geelong, more than 16,000 transports were provided to patients across the Barwon region to get to and from medical appointments at Barwon Health.

You can never have too many PALZ

Past District 9780 Governor, Cathy Roth, has always believed that Rotarians are primed to identify and meet community needs.

When her fellow Rotarian and surgeon husband John was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, Cathy realised there was a need to support professional Alzheimer’s sufferers such as John.

PALZ – Professionals with Alzheimer’s was born from the desperate need Cathy saw for those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and similar diseases, to maintain dignity and mental stimulus.
