CHILD AND MATERNAL HEALTH

‘There is no greater bond than that between Mother and Child’

World Health Organisation WHO states that:-
5.6million children under the age of five died in 2016.
More than half of those deaths were due to conditions that could have been prevented or treated by access to simple, affordable interventions.

Locally we support programs to increase the bonding between mother and child with the distribution of literacy and ‘First Books for newborns.’ We take for granted the prenatal, birthing and postnatal assistance offered as a matter of course.

Many do not enjoy those programs and facilities.
Whether through poverty, conflict and dislocation or simple because of remoteness and the tyranny of distance. Challenges of lack of clean water and sanitation, malnutrition or lack of education, all contribute to affecting the survival rates of both mothers and children.
Rotary members through their collective great work, often assisted by the resources of The Rotary Foundation, provide education, immunisations, birthing kits and mobile health clinics. Women are taught to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission, how to breast feed and how to protect themselves and their children from disease.

Only very recently we were exposed to the hardships of trying to survive in Nepal with mothers and children and having a disability. An even greater challenge. These were the circumstances which have led to Rotary Peace Scholar, Stephanie Woollard to form ‘Seven Women’ to assist with health, education, micro finance, occupations, and independence of these disadvantaged women.

We can take action to support programs which:-
Provide immunizations and antibiotics for measles, malaria, TB, pneumonia, AIDS and diarrheal diseases.
Promote good nutrition, water and sanitation.
Provide education for family planning.
Provide and support education and training for health professionals.

Many of the programs either conducted or in need of support can be found on the Rotary International website under Rotary Showcase and Rotary Ideas.
Again we can assist by supporting RAGs, Rotary Action Groups of which FPS Food Plant Solutions is a registered RAWCS Project. www.foodplantsolutions.org . The ever-increasing demand on their services means their resources are stretched and need support. They wish us to be aware that:-
‘Every minute of every day, 5 children under the age of 5 die from malnutrition.”

In Australia we have also committed to ‘End Trachoma 2020’
By supporting a detailed program, we can eliminate a potentially crippling eye disease in our indigenous community by breaking the cycle of infection of the transmission of the disease. This will necessitate a mixture of infection control, clean water, hygiene practices and education.

We can individually, but more importantly collectively, through ‘Rotary: Make a Difference”

ROWLEY TOMPSETT  CRLSS  MICDA  JP
Chair of Shelterbox

Following the initial earthquake on the 26th February, ShelterBox deployed a team to PNG.  Our team was on the ground on the 15th March and spend two weeks searching for an implementing partner (a humanitarian organisation that will support us with importation, installation or distribution of our aid); our preferred mode of operating.  There are very isolated villages in the disaster area we need to access and in order to do this effectively the local villagers need to have an understanding of us and how we work, and we also need to be familiar with how they operate.  In this instance we could not gain this knowledge or secure a local partner to operate in this manner.

The lack of an implementing partner, and the recognised security risk in PNG, meant we were not able to operate as a single agency, and were not prepared to put our volunteer ShelterBox Response Team members at risk. Consequently, we won’t be able to operate in PNG; the team has withdrawn and returned home.

While our team has departed, we are keeping a close eye on the situation and should there be a change in circumstances in PNG we may return.

I am aware that a number of Clubs and individual Rotarians made donations specifically for the PNG disaster.  Those funds can still be used to support ShelterBox operations in Syria, Somaliland, Bolivia and the Lake Chad basin.  There is always more to be done … and we don’t know when the next disaster will strike.  Nonetheless, if any donor wishes to have their PNG donation applied to another specific disaster, or returned to them, ShelterBox will respect those wishes.  All they need do is contact ShelterBox on 1300 996 038 to make those wishes known.
