Vocational Service

There is no real science in finding the answer when it comes to the question of “ what makes a good club “. It has however been my experience that a good club ( and how do we define a good club ? ) is made up of a diverse group of people. Diversity can be looked at as meaning a variety of age, background, gender and most importantly – skills. This is the basis of what different vocations bring to the life of a club.

Connecting with different vocations is about an authentic approach to improving our capacity to improve diversity and club skill set. Drawing on that skill set increases our ability to do projects – and can mean taking an idea to realisation more rapidly. Vocational diversity strengthens our clubs and empowers individuals from different walks of life to work and collaborate together.

Valuing all vocations is not a new philosophy in Rotary. It is part of what makes us the diverse organisation that we are – and provides us with the skill set to make things happen. Diversity of vocations enables Rotary to better Serve Humanity.

Be BOLD - you never know what you can achieve until you are BOLD enough to try

Rotarians visit schools in Abom, Indonesia

In September 2016 a group of 14 Rotarians, partners and friends from the Rotary Club of Wendouree Breakfast (Ballarat, Victoria) travelled to Ambon City on Ambon Island, Indonesia, to visit previous projects completed through the assistance of Rotary Foundation District Grants and search for more projects.

Ambon City has a population of over 355,600 and is situated approximately half way between the main island of Indonesia and West Papua. Indonesian life expectancy is 69.23 years and the infant mortality rate is 23.017 deaths/1,000 live births.[1]

The project at schools 2 and 4 (same location) was to provide drainage for the main quadrangle as when it rained the area flooded and children had difficulty accessing other school rooms and toilets.  When we visited we were treated to a tropical downpour so were able to observe the drainage in action.  Both teachers and students enjoyed our visit and we were able to see students at work learning English and singing songs.

RC of Portland Bay - Cemetery Pavilion Project

A new pavilion at Portland’s cemetery will provide shelter for visitors during inclement weather, and is also a potential venue for graveside services.

The timber structure was built by the Rotary Club of Portland Bay and will include two semi-transparent walls.

“The idea was mooted in 2012 – 2013”, past Club President Annette Ryan said.
“I was doing research on my family history at other cemeteries and realised we have all the history in our town too, but no shelter.  A lot of time, effort and volunteer work has gone into this project since” she said.

Celebrating Earth Day

District 9780 Preserve Planet Earth (PPE) Committee has embarked on a District wide project of celebrating Earth Day in 2017.
In addition to the many environmentally directed projects being promoted annually by District 9780 Clubs, the PPE committee decided that there should be an Annual Day on which all Clubs come together and, in their own way, undertake an event that promotes environmental awareness. Earth Day on the 22nd of April each year, given the world wide promotion of the event, was an ideal fit

There is no limit to the ideas that could be used to celebrate Earth Day. These could range from promoting a local media focus on what the Club is doing about protecting the environment, having a tree planting project involving community groups and schools to having a guest speaker on environmental awareness and climate change. If all 59 clubs act together on Earth Day this will send a strong message that Rotary is very serious about protecting the Environment.
