YOUTH SERVICES

Youth Services is now the 5th Avenue of Service, created some years ago as ‘New Generations’, because of the comprehensive suite of programs in which we are involved. We have as Clubs and District, dedicated a portfolio to Youth Services, because we realise the importance of youth activities and the rewarding nature of being involved in these programs.

I recently discovered that we have a program - ‘EarlyAct’ for delivering a structured sponsored program in primary schools. This program operates actively in District 9710 Victoria. At Kerang and several other clubs, a variation of this school-based community program, has been successful for many years.

‘Interact’ is now active again in our District, as a result of the Rotary Club of Belmont’s energy and enthusiasm. Well done Belmont. There are also indications that there may be a possibility of further clubs being established in Central Victoria.

‘Rotaract’ in their 50th year, are alive and well, with potential growth of new clubs in several centres in our District. These young adults, are well led and have a lot to share with our traditional Rotary members - energy, youthful outlooks, technically savvy and the world at their feet. Engage with a Rotaractor today.

RYPEN Rotary Program of Enrichment 14-17yo our junior leadership program is in recess this year, but back next year, with renewed committee and activities.

RYLA Rotary Youth Leadership Award 18-25yo our leadership program, recently showed its fantastic qualities with another collection of 42 graduates from around the District. The feedback from the RYLARIANS as they reported back to sponsoring Clubs, was fantastic and is a restoration in the future of humanity.

RYE Rotary Youth Exchange is our greatest contribution to Peace and Conflict resolution, with District 9780 having exchanged students with communities across the world for over 50 years. Numbering in excess of 2000 ambassadors, who have set up networks of friends across the world, this program continues to foster these important networks. All of this occurs as the students grow and develop incredibly within themselves.

We also have a great array of Vocational programs -  NYSF National Youth Science Forums, ConocoPhillips  Science Experience, Science & Engineering Challenge, Pride of Workmanship Apprenticeship Awards  and Defying the Drift, to mention a few. These are supplemented by the many scholarships and awards negotiated at a local level.

There are programs involving literacy, dictionaries, mentoring and assisting to develop confidence through debating and public speaking. We also support the arts, music and sporting programs of our youth.

I believe this Avenue of our service, is where we do some of our best work. The opportunities are only limited to the needs on the community and our imagination. The rewards are then equal to the size of the challenge.

Many thanks to the combined talents of the clubs of our District 9780 for your efforts in assisting the youth of our communities. This is a great investment in our future.

I am honoured to advise you ShelterBox has been nominated for the 2018  Nobel Peace Prize, the winner to be announced in October.  Whatever the result, this is an amazing nomination and we are truly honoured. The nomination reflects the incredible work done by the ShelterBox staff and volunteers around the world, and to those who have supported us, especially the many Rotary Clubs and Rotarians.

The nomination is also an implicit recognition of the partnership between ShelterBox and Rotary International.  Two great organisations combining their efforts to provide disaster aid wherever it may be required across our world.  I am reminded that last year we helped 32,000 households, or 160,000 people, who had lost everything through conflict or natural disaster. We responded to world events 24 times in the year and deployed aid to 20 different countries. Rotary groups around the world helped us provide vulnerable people with emergency shelter and aid in almost all of the countries we have worked in affected by natural disaster.  In 2017, we also surpassed the highest number of days ever deployed in one year. This includes 84 ShelterBox Response Team volunteers who deployed for a total of 1,530 days. That’s an average volunteer deployment of 18 days each.

I never underestimate the impact of the support of Rotary International, Rotary Clubs and individual Rotarian has to ShelterBox in achieving our goal of no family without shelter.

As we continue to pursue our goal, we thank each and every one of you for the support given, and make an impassioned plea for that support to continue into the future.  As individual organisations we can make a difference in the world; as a partnership we can do even more.  Thank you.

Umoja Orphanage Kenya (RAWCS Project 51/2011-12)

A trip down memory lane -  October 2014

Doesn't seem so long ago we began construction on our first children's accommodation at the Umoja Project. You have assisted us to grow and grow.

I've just spent 5 weeks at the project spending time with our children, lots of organising, meetings, and the daily challenges, tribulations and frustrations of doing things in Kenya, which is so vastly different to Australia. To be there for both homes initial construction was pretty special.

AUSTRALIAN ROTARY HEALTH - supporting healthier minds, bodies and communities through research, awareness and education.

One of the greatest pleasures as a charity that funds research, is providing opportunities to new researchers who have a passion for making a difference through science.

Funding Partner PhD Scholarship recipient Noor Jarbou has been passionate about medical science research her whole life, and with financial support from Australian Rotary Health, she hopes to add some valuable knowledge to the field of perinatal infant mental health.  click here and read more.

Great News on World Water Day Disaster Aid Australia (DAA) was able to make a great announcement on our Colombian Project on World Water Day. After an 18-month application process we learned we were successful in having a US$50,000 grant approved by The Rotary Foundation. The project, which is in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Bogoto Teusaquillo will provide SkyHydrants for 25 remote schools: Safe Water for over 9,000 children.

Introducing Disaster Aid to South Africa Dave Tuzewski from Disaster Aid Australia recently travelled to South Africa to spread the Disaster Aid message. The photo shows Dave on the right demonstrating the SkyHydrant to Mark Rainier and J.P. Schwartz from the Rotary Club of Warmbaths. Dave and the Warmbath Rotarians attended a meeting of the WaterKloof [Pretoria] Centurion and Pretoria Sunrise Clubs to talk about our aim of Safe Water for Every Child. Rotarians have agreed to set up a display at the District 9400 Conference in June, to be held in Kruger Park.

 FOOD PLANT SOLUTIONS

Dear Raymond,
·       5 children under the age of 5 die every minute from malnutrition.
·       Each year hunger and malnutrition kills 1.5 times MORE people than AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and natural disasters combined.
And, there is stunting:
  • The first 1000 days from conception are critical in a child’s development.   If they do not receive adequate nutrients during this time, they can suffer irreparable damage – both physically and mentally.
  • It is estimated that stunting affects 165 million children under five years old – one out of every four
  • Stunting - or low height for age - traps people into a lifelong cycle of poor nutrition, illness, poverty and inequity and potentially becomes intergenerational.
  • A child’s poorer school performance results in future income reductions of up to 22 per cent on average.
  • As adults, they are also at increased risk of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
  • If we prevent stunting (and it can be prevented), then these people as adults will have the ability to make informed choices.  Then we have real, lasting change.  It can be achieved.
Food Plant Solutions through the implementation of school gardens with program partners, has seen malnutrition reduced by as much as 95%
We need your help to continue this work, please consider;
Malnutrition robs children of their future, together we CAN change this.

Karalyn Hingston
